I'm not even sure what this is, but it looks interesting. It was at the top of a thick pipe coming out of the ground. Gas? Ventilation? Anyone know?

I searched for AFC and System Sensor, and it turns out this thing was probably made by American Flow Control - see http://www.acipco.com/afc/aboutus.cfm Judging from this page and also systemsensor.com website, it seems this is an indicator post for a gate valve which has the PIBV2 butterfly valve supervisory switch from System Sensor attached to it - http://www.systemsensor.com/html/ssm.html?UniqueID=55 I believe we are talking about water flow because the PIBV2 is listed under sprinkler system monitoring. The installation instructions for this http://www.systemsensor.com/pdf/I56-0394.pdf show how to attach this sensor switch to a very similar looking indicator post. From http://www.acipco.com/afc/ip-71 we learn that "Indicator posts are used to actuate and indicate open/shut status of buried gate valves. They are recommended for use in fire protection systems or installations where it is critical that valve status be known." I venture this does not mean lawn care.
