Nat:

How can you call it a "telephone" when it doesn't have a handset? Should be "intercom" or "back to base microphone".

It's like the alarm button in the elevator - yes, it makes a noise in the elevator ... but can anyone else hear it? Who else is alerted when the button is pressed? Or is it just meant to make you feel safe ...

mikel:

nat, i think "telephone" is a name that defines perfectly the mission for this stuff and i think that the alternative names you suggest are not so clear.
Anyway may be you are right about the definition of "telephone".
p.s: where i live the alarm button is IN the elevator but the alarm sound(?) is generated outside.
