Love the "Engine Working Wrong" Setting. Does that shut everything down in a way that "Stop" doesn't? I'm guessing so.
No Ideas But In Things is a library of controls, animations, layouts, and displays that might be a source of inspiration for interaction designers. Dan Saffer is the curator.
The title comes from a William Carlos Williams poem.

yup, its a 'heads up' to the engine room for them to look at the dial again because the engine isnt doing what the capt asked for.

How can the captain tell? What's the feedback mechanism? Does he just work off engine revs?

On smaller boats, such as in this image, you can hear and feel what the engine/boat is doing.
This is an odd dial, normally the capt moves the handle over top position which rings a bell, if the command is missed he rings the bell again. Feedback on larger boats was provided by a 2nd dial on the bridge controlled by the engineer.
I assume the 'hook up' segment (hidden behind the lever) might mean this is a tug.
